Name: Jon Moscot
Age: 23
Position: RHP
Acquired: 4th-round pick in 2012 amateur draft
Highest Level: Triple-A Louisville Bats
2014 Statistics (minors): 8-11 W-L, 3.40 ERA, 2 CG, 1.260 WHIP
Overview:
Jon Moscot spent most of the 2014 campaign with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, logging 25 starts and posting a 3.13 ERA and 7-10 record. He made the jump to the Triple-A Louisville Bats late in the season and got roughed up for a 5.71 ERA in three starts. Since being drafted in the fourth round in 2012, Moscot has made steady progress in moving up the Reds’ system, thanks largely to a power-pitcher profile that saw him strike out better than one batter per inning prior to 2014.
Last season, with his graduation to higher levels of minor league ball, Moscot’s strikeout rate tumbled to 6.5 per nine innings, but he also reined in his walks a bit. In 2013, he allowed 3.5 free passes per nine innings, but cut that to 2.7 in 2014.
Moscot should begin the season with Louisville again, and he’ll be joined in the rotation by Robert Stephenson in what could be a preview of the rotation we’ll see in Cincinnati in a couple of seasons.
Before that can happen, though, Moscot will need to show that he is still the power pitcher the Reds thought he was, or continue to improve his control.
