Dang it! The Reds dropped another game to the previously-struggling San Diego Padres last night, and that loss leaves Cincinnati three games over .500 with less than two weeks until the All-Star break.
These Reds have the potential to thrill us every night, but they also hold the threat of long-term heartbreak over our heads like an overfilled water balloon. A decade or more ago, much the same could be said of Cincinnati infielder Pokey Reese. He had the speed and flash to make us think he just might be the guy to actually steal first base, but he was reckless enough to swing from heels every at-bat even though he was nearly pubescent in his build. He thought he was Eric Davis, but really had the ability of Eric Young.
Never you mind, though, because Pokey Reese had that awesome hair, and that name! How could you not love a speed demon nicknamed Pokey who wanted to rule the baseball world? You couldn’t that’s how, at least until his act wore thin. That took seven years in Cincinnati, and all that time he wore number 3; Pokey is our guy today.
