Brandon Phillips was the subject of trade rumors in the spring and then overcame a flap about hustle to post decent, but not spectacular, numbers. Through 86 games, his OPS (.701) was the lowest of his career in Cincinnati, but he was somewhat of a steadying presence for a team that struggled on offense and with consistency. Then, of course, Phillips ripped his thumb apart, and the Reds have another hole to fill.
