The Reds took another one on the chin yesterday afternoon, losing to the San Diego Padres, 3-0, while picking up only three hits. The loss leaves the Reds just two games over .500 at 43-41. Two days before that, they were coming off an improbable four-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants and stood FIVE games over even. From five over to two over in 48 hours. *sigh*
Of all the guys who have ever worn number 2 for the Reds, no one exemplifies their current situation quite like shortstop Zack Cozart. Since his debut in 2011, Cozart’s OPS+ has fallen steadily, from .811 to .588 this year. Sometimes, it seems, Cozart couldn’t even buy a hit in the Beatles section of iTunes.
Sorry for the negativity, but man, those Padres games were rough. To his credit, Cozart did go 2-for-8 in San Diego, so there’s that. Hmmm … two hits. Uniform number 2.
Yeah, Cozart is our Mr. Number 2.
