Cinderella can fly. The Dayton Flyers continued their Cinderella run into the tournament Saturday upsetting the #3 seeded Syracuse Orange. As an #11 seed Dayton upsetter the #6 seeded Ohio State Buckeyes in the first round on Thursday. A 55-53 win Saturday now sends the Flyers to the Sweet 16.
What you need to know about Saturday night’s game. Syracuse failed to make a three point shot for the first time since 1995. That ultimately doomed the Orange going 0-10 from behind the arc while Dayton responded going 7-16 from beyond the arc. Those 7 threes kept Dayton in the game.
This was a low scoring, hard fought game. A game reminiscent of the old Big East for Syracuse, and while Syracuse fell flat on its face over the last month and a half of the season after starting 25-0, Dayton has come to life in March. An Atlantic 10 team, a mid major has taken down the elites from two power conferences the Big 10 and the ACC.
Dayton remains the only team in Ohio that is still in the Tournament. Xavier lost in the play in game, Cincinnati and Ohio State lost in the first round, but Dayton keeps on finding ways to win. While everyone is disappointed their team lost, everyone has put their support behind the Flyers. The Flyers are going to their first Sweet 16 since 1984, that season they also went to the Elite 8, could it happen again?
Following the game last night The University of Dayton student body lost their collective minds, as they should have. The little team that could keeps on winning. The students took the streets last night, the area that surrounds Dayton is by no means a lovely place, one can only imagine what it looks like after this.
Riot police, the school President crowd surfing, there was a burning couch and thousands of drunk Dayton kids celebrating what no other Dayton students have been able to celebrate in 30 years. Carry on Flyers.
The Flyers face the winner of the Stanford v. Kansas in the Sweet 16, that game will take place Thursday, tip time has not been announced yet.
