At 5pm ET The University of Cincinnati is expected to name former Colorado University Athletic Director Mike Bohn as the next Cincinnati AD. Bohn takes over for the departed Whit Babcock who left for Virginia Tech.
A native of Illinois Bohn comes into Cincinnati after serving at CU as AD from 2005-2013, he also served as the AD at Idaho from 1998-2003 then San Diego State from 2003-2005 before heading to Colorado. Bohn resigned from his position as Athletic Director at Colorado in May of 2013.
During his time at Colorado Bohn oversaw numerous changes in the university. The biggest was moving Colorado from the Big 12 to the Pac-12. He made the move during the time period when it appeared the Big12 would dissolve, looking back now he may have a different decision. Bohn also over saw the hiring of 11 head coaches during his time in Colorado. He hired Dan Hawkins as head football coach, who when 16-33 during his time in Colorado, Bohn retained Hawkins after going 16-30, only to fire him 3 games into the 2010 season. He then hired John Embree who subsequently went 4-21 over his two seasons.
As you can see Mike Bohn is not the greatest at hiring head coaches, none of his teams did anything on a national stage during his tenure and he apparently left the athletic finance department in shambles according to some reports. Hopefully Tommy Tuberville and Mick Cronin are true to their word and stay so Bohn won’t have to oversee a new hire.
The only reason Cincinnati can use to justify this hiring is the fact that Bohn knows how to move conferences. Cincinnati has made it no secret they would like to leave the AAC for another conference, with this hire it is highly unlikely Cincinnati could join the Big 12, so the ACC seems to be Cincinnati’s destination.
