The Xavier men are set to take to the hardwood on Saturday night against Kentucky State. With the basketball season upon us and the hopes for a championship season for the Musketeers, the campus and city are abuzz. But before the team takes the court on Saturday, let’s take a look at the other sporting news around campus in our weekly Xavier: Campus Sports Report.
The men and women’s cross country teams kicked off the Atlantic 10 Championship season this week in Philadelphia. Juniors Tom Ohlman and Clare Fischer won Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors. They also placed in the top 10 for the Musketeers. Then women placed 5th overall and the men took 10th. The Xavier cross country teams will be on the road again in two weeks when they travel to Wisconsin to partake in NCAA Regionals.
Xavier men’s soccer will close out its regular season with home matches against Rhode Island and Massachusetts this weekend. This past week, junior midfielder Matt Walker was rewarded for his three goal performance by being named the College Sports Madness Atlantic 10 Player of the Week. Walker scored the only goal in the matchup against VCU on Friday. Then two days later scored twice against Richmond.
The Musketeer women’s basketball team kicks off their season on Saturday afternoon in the Cintas Center. Head coach Amy Waugh will be returning for her second season to lead the team. Waugh is the first Xavier alumnus to the program. Last season, Xavier made its 17th consecutive appearance in the Atlantic 10 Championship. The women have made the tournament every season since it has been a member of the league.
The Xavier women’s soccer team closed out their season on Senior Day this week. The Richmond Spiders came to town and got the best of the Musketeers by a score of 1-0. The lone goal came in the 26th minute. Four senior women Musketeers were recognized by the team for their contributions.
The women’s volleyball team finds themselves tied for second place in the A-10 with Richmond. The team will face off against them on Friday night. The women Musketeers will play hard for the win so that they can get a second seed going in to championship play, allowing the team to receive a first week bye. Cincinnati native Stephanie Vorherr was named the A-10 Defensive Player of the Week for the seventh time in her Musketeer career this week. She is currently in fourth place on the A-10’s all time digs chart.
