It was another busy weekend in the sporting world. We crowned champions and made the palace guards smile. So, as the weekend settles, let’s take a look around the leagues.
For us in Cincinnati, baseball news has been scarce since our Reds fell to the Giants in the first round of postseason play. It wasn’t all for not, though, because Major League Baseball crowned a new champion last night. Those Giants that were a thorn in our side swept the Tigers and became the 2012 World Series Champs. If it was going to be anyone, I am glad it was them. Saying their destiny beat the Reds, makes me feel a little better.
The good news in the NFL this week; The Bengals didn’t lose. It doesn’t matter that they didn’t play. At least the bye week kept the guys in stripes in the mix in the muddled AFC. However, the Steelers and Browns both won yesterday, further cementing the drastic need to win for the Bengals. Pittsburgh’s win places Cincinnati in 3rd place in the AFC North standings.
In other NFL news, the New England Patriots traveled to “Old” England to face the Rams in London’s traditional seasonal taste of American Football. The packed house at Wembley Stadium watched Tom Brady annihilate St. Louis on New England’s way to a 45-7 victory. Back in the states in Sunday Night Football, Peyton Manning was able to manhandle Drew Brees and the Saints by throwing 3 touchdown passes on the Bronco’s way to a win of 34-14.
The Bears barely scraped by with a win to the Panthers with a score of 23-22.
The Browns beat the Chargers 7-6.
Detroit won a crazy won, overcoming Seattle in the final seconds of the game 28-24.
Jaguars kept up with the Packers, but eventually fell to Green Bay 15-24.
The Colts overcame the Titans in another close one, 19-13.
Miami forced the Jets fans to shout for Tebow after smashing their offense 30-9.
The Falcons stayed undefeated for the first time in team history with a win over the Eagles 30-17.
Pittsburgh overcame RGIII and the Redskins with a score of 27-12.
Oakland beat Kansas City 26-16.
The NFL “Game of the Week” saw the Giants take the Cowboys in their second showdown 29-24.
The NHL may be locked out, but the forgotten play of minor league hockey is still alive in Cincinnati. The Cyclones were at home this weekend to face the Elmira Jackals in US Bank Arena. It was a close game, but the Cyclones ended up losing in overtime again 2-3, bringing their season record to 3-2. Both of their losses have come in close overtime matches.
It was a busy weekend and looks to be a busy week. Monday Night Football will see the 49ers take on the Cardinals. The Bengals talk will get more interesting this week as the team comes back to Cincinnati to gear up for a hot Peyton Manning next week and the Bearcats will be looking to get back on the win wagon this Saturday. Also, NCAA Basketball talk is starting to heat up as we approach the November tip-off date. Currently the RealTimeRpi.com power rankings place the Bearcats at 27 and the Musketeers at 72. Stay Tuned!
