Bengals Notes:

Tonight, the Cincinnati Bengals will host the Indianapolis Colts tonight in the annual I-74 keep-it-close-to-home-so-we-can-focus-on-the-real-season NFL preseason finale.   The Bengals played the Arizona Cardinals on the road just four days ago, and most of Cincy’s starters got a good workout, so don’t expect to see much more than a quick tune-up from the first-stringers at Paul Brown Stadium this evening.

One guy you almost surely won’t see is linebacker Vontaze Burfict, who tweaked a hamstring against the Cards and then made his contract extension official this week.   He’ll be resting to rehab and prep for the September 6 opener against the Baltimore Ravens.

More from Cincinnati Bengals

Quarterback Andy Dalton may make it into a series or two, but the QB duties tonight will likely be split mostly between Jason Campbell and Tyler Wilson.  The two are waging an ongoing battle to see who will get to drive the Bengals into the ground in the event that Dalton goes down for an extended period this season.

Really, this game will be all about slotting backups (linebacker, WR, RB) and helping coaches and management to decide how the final 53-man roster will shape up.  The running back field may be particularly interesting to watch, BenJarvus Green-Ellis makes a last attempt to hold back father time and the Bengals’ stable of young runners to cling to a roster spot.

However it plays out, enjoy the last frivolous moments of the Bengals preseason, because it gets real starting tomorrow!
