offense is a head scratcher, last night they score eight runs, while collecting 12 hits, tonight no runs on three hits as Brewers starter Wily Peralta shut down the offense .

For already the fourth time this season, the Reds were shut out in a 2-0 loss to the Brewers on Friday. It was also the fifth time they have lost a game when the pitching staff allowed two or fewer runs.

Reds starter Mike Leake was the unfortunate one after working eight strong innings and allowing two runs on Peralta’s unlikely two-run double in the fifth inning. Leake gave up seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

Leake retired his first nine batters in a row before Carlos Gomez started the fourth inning reaching on a infield single, and then advancing on Zack Cozart‘s throwing error.

A double play got Leake out of the fourth inning, but a two-out double by Peralta to right field in the fifth was just enough for him and his team to earn the win tonight.

Peralta had retired eight in a row until Joey Votto led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a drive to the top of the left-field fence. It was originally ruled a double, but looked like a possible home run. A crew chief review of the play confirmed the original call. Votto was left stranded, as the Reds continue to what they do always, is leaving runners left on base.

A two-out walk in the fifth by Ramon Santiago was followed by Leake reaching on Segura’s  throwing error. Chris Heisey grounded out to end the inning. Peralta’s final hit allowed was Todd Frazier‘s ground-rule double to right-center field with one out in the sixth. Jay Bruce struck out and Brayan Pena grounded out to first as Peralta retired his final eight in a row before giving way to closer Francisco Rodriguez.

So, not a great start to the “Star Wars” weekend festivities at Great American Ballpark, both teams are back at it tomorrow night as ace Johnny Cueto will be on the mound for the Reds.

First pitch is at 7:10pm.
