Yes you read the headline correctly. Corky Miller the catcher for the Cincinnati Reds affiliate in Louisville pitched an inning during the Riverbats game Sunday against the Toledo Mud Hens.

As you can expect this was merely a joke. When you are getting killed somedays you just say the hell with it and have a little fun. The Mud Hens roughed up Louisville starter David Holmberg early. Holmberg would only last 0.1IP allowing 6 earned runs. Anytime you give up 6 runs in the first inning, you know it will be a long day.

Louisville did answer in the first with two runs of their own. By the ninth inning though with the Mud Hens up 12-5, Louisville decided to shake things up a little bit. Insert Corky Miller.

Miller entered in the 9th with a 12-5 deficit to protect, he left the 9th with the Riverbats now down 20-5. Not exactly the best outing for the 38 year old mustached veteran. Miller went 1.0IP, 7 hits, 8 earned runs, 2 walks and 1 strike out. That sets Miller’s ERA at 72.00 for the season.

This is not Miller’s first appearance as a pitcher for the Riverbats. In 2013 Miller appeared in three games on the mound. In his 3 games last season he performed much better. He pitched 4.2 innings last season giving up only 4 hits and 4 runs while striking out 1 batter. His 2013 ERA was 7.71, much better than his 2014 ERA of 72.00.

Having Corky come into the game was merely for fun and something for the fans to talk about. Corky is a great ambassador for the Reds and it is great to see him willing to do anything for the team.
