The Cincinnati Bearcats head into the Belk Bowl Saturday against the North Carolina Tar Heels looking for another 10 win season. Their fifth 10 win season in the last six years, a feat that has only been matched by a few programs over that time period.

A 10 win season in college football is considered a great season, generally it guarantees you a good bowl game and a possible conference championship. Cincinnati this season currently sits at 9-3 headed into Saturday, last season they sat in the same position as they headed into the same Belk Bowl to play the Duke Blue Devils. A win in the Belk Bowl last season gave Cincinnati a 10 win season with an interim head coach.

This season Cincinnati has been met with immense adversity, freshman Ben Flick passed away, freshman Mark Barr clinged to life following the same crash that killed Flick. Starting quarterback Munchie Legaux had his knee destroyed against Illinois. Then to top it off Cincinnati lost to Louisville thanks in part to the AAC referees inability to review plays.

Now comes Saturday and a game that could give Cincinnati another 10 win season. If you look back at programs over the last 6 years that have 10 win seasons in 5 of those years you see programs like Alabama, Oregon, Ohio State to name a few. Cincinnati has joined the ranks of perennial winners. Say what you want about the conference they play in, who else has done what they have in the same conference? No one.

A win Saturday will validate Cincinnati’s season, that loss to USF, that poor showing against Miami will all be forgotten. And coach Tommy Tuberville will have had a phenomenal first season in Cincinnati.

Tune in Saturday at 3:20pm ET ESPN for the Belk Bowl.
